Inside the Song Series #3: Magic Attic

When I was a young mother, I had a recurring nightmare where I struggled to reach my attic through a cramped, winding tunnel with dark wooden stairs. Once I crawled through the claustrophobic opening, I’d enter a giant attic space. It was wonderful—extra rooms and beds and multiple places to explore. But soon I’d realize that the attic was haunted. I never encountered any spirits or ghosts—it was just a terrible feeling of dread and dark gray tones that overtook the space. I’d wake with a gasp and my heart beating ferociously.

I once read that if you have a recurring dream, your soul is trying to get a message to you. And, if you don’t receive it, your psyche will keep sending it until you do. After two years of dreaming some version of this haunted attic, I still wasn’t getting the meaning. So, I sat down to analyze each part of the dream.

At the time, I was waking up to my own creative longings that I had kept dormant for decades. I decided the nightmare was my soul telling me to claim my attic as my creative space. Determined to heed the message, I asked a handyman to help me paint it white, cover the ceiling insulation with linen cloth and clean out all the dust.

One week into the project, a dead baby bat appeared at the attic pull-down door entrance. I knew I was cleaning out the stale energies that had been “haunting” the space. As I watched the attic transform from dark and creepy to light and happy, I felt both nervous and excited. But the best part of all...when the attic redo was complete, I never once had that nightmare again. Message received—designate and inhabit my own creative space!

I wrote this song to celebrate my attic journey:
